Now her family is living their American dream in South Florida. Peacock's family is just one example of people pursuing the American dream, which can mean different things to different people, like achieving homeownership. Some Gen Zers see the American dream has changed from how older peers may have seen it. For us, the American dream is also the weather and the beach lifestyle, and we have that." "We're legally entitled to do the last stage from within the country, but it's a very complicated and lengthy process," Peacock said.

When Vice President Kamala Harris greeted Dick Barnett on Friday, he was concise in his response. “Finally.”At long last, six surviving members of the all-Black Tennessee Agricultural & Industrial State University in Nashville visited the White House, the culmination of a decades-long effort, led by Mr. Barnett, for recognition. The Tennessee A&I Tigers were the first team from a historically Black college or university to win any national championship, and the first college team to win three back-to-back championships, in 1957, 1958 and 1959. The former teammates — Mr. Barnett, George Finley, Ernest Jones, Henry Carlton, Robert Clark and Ron Hamilton — took part in a private ceremony in the Roosevelt Room of the White House with Ms. Harris, who paid tribute to the team during a round-table discussion.

It was only a matter of time before a college would have the nerve to quote its cost of attendance at nearly $100,000 a year. One letter to a newly admitted Vanderbilt University engineering student showed an all-in price — room, board, personal expenses, a high-octane laptop — of $98,426. Only a tiny fraction of college-going students will pay anything close to this anytime soon, and about 35 percent of Vanderbilt students — those who get neither need-based nor merit aid — pay the full list price. But a few dozen other colleges and universities that reject the vast majority of applicants will probably arrive at this threshold within a few years. Their willingness to cross it raises two questions for anyone shopping for college: How did this happen, and can it possibly be worth it?

CNN —Donald Trump made an unexpected declaration Tuesday when probed about a six-week abortion ban that will soon take effect in his home state of Florida. “We’ll be making a statement next week on abortion,” the former president told reporters in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Other close advisers, however, have expressed concern that Trump will give further ammunition to Democrats by supporting any new restrictions on abortion. “It was bound to happen at some point where he needed to clarify his position,” a Trump adviser told CNN. Amazon is resuming construction on a 42-story office tower in the Seattle suburb of Bellevue, the company said Thursday, after 22 floors of the building sat unfinished since 2022. In December, Amazon opened the first half of the 42-story office tower in Bellevue, dubbed "Sonic," and moved about 1,000 employees into the building. Amazon has continued to secure office space outside of Seattle, where it's headquartered. The tower, its largest, will have about 1 million square feet of office space. The second phase, referred to as PenPlace, includes three 22-story office buildings, retail space and a 350-foot-tall tower called "The Helix."

Beyoncé released a genre-bending country album, “Cowboy Carter,” last week. In outlaw country tradition, “Cowboy Carter” settles scores with haters and with history. It was for the white Southern voters Nixon needed to win over amid massive resistance to Black enfranchisement. Embracing country music is a loyalty test for conservative politicians and right-wing pundits whose career ambitions align with white identity politics. Beyoncé singing country music in this political climate was always going to cause a stir.

Referendums protecting abortion access are on a winning streak nationwide, including in states far more red than Florida. Outside of Barack Obama’s 2008 and 2012 victories, Democrats have struggled to find success in Florida while Republicans are on a roll. The GOP now controls every statewide Cabinet office in Florida, its two US Senate seats and both state legislative chambers. In 2016, Trump won Florida despite a medical marijuana initiative on the ballot that Democrats hoped would aid their performance. “There is nothing more common than Democrats claiming they have some magical way to win Florida and they always come up short,” Power said.

A few years ago, Terry Gilliam, 64, packed his bags, sold his East Bay, California home, and moved to Florida. After founding two Facebook groups for California movers, he realized thousands more were in the same boat. His groups, Leaving California and Life After California, have nearly 300,000 members between them. Gilliam moved to Winter Park, a city of 29,000 outside Orlando, to help care for his parents. And Beyoncé’s bold, brilliant new album “Act II: Cowboy Carter,” which dropped Friday, is no exception to those musical roots. Roxanne Jones CNNIt was from Africa that the banjo, the signature instrument of country music, arrived on our nation’s shores. For a brief time in the 1960s and 1970s, Black country music artists received some commercial success and recognition. And, though he’s in the Country Music Hall of Fame today, Bailey was never recognized for his countless contributions to the genre. And by this measure, I’d say Beyoncé’s second act, “Cowboy Carter,” is indeed classic country music.

Beyoncé fans had spent the day racing from store to store, searching for their first cowboy hat or pair of white cowboy boots. They brought out the denim jackets lined with silver fringe, the brown and white cow print skirts and the silver rhinestones to stud just above their eyelid. Then on Friday night, they headed downtown to the famed strip of honky-tonks and bars on Lower Broadway in Nashville to listen to Beyoncé’s new album, “Cowboy Carter,” a tapestry of not only country music, but also contemporary pop music, funk and other genres. “I’ve never seen so many people that look like me in cowboy hats in my life,” Nia Blair, 24, marveled, dancing in her own pair of new boots. She added, “one album did all this.”

Beyoncé has gone country, sure … but it turns out that’s only the half of it. For months, the superstar, who made her name in R&B and pop, has been telegraphing her version of country music and style. At midnight on Friday, Beyoncé finally released her new album, “Cowboy Carter,” and the country bona fides were certainly there. Yet “Cowboy Carter” is far broader than simply a country album. That theory is made clear on the spoken track “Spaghettii,” featuring the pioneering but long absent Black country singer Linda Martell, who in 1970 released an album called “Color Me Country.”

With the release of “Cowboy Carter,” Beyoncé’s eighth solo album and the one that finds her exploring — and testing — the boundaries of country music, much of the early conversation has centered on whether the country music industry would rally around her. Rather than being feted with a welcome party, Beyoncé has been met largely with shrugs. Beyoncé is Black, and a woman, two groups that contemporary Nashville has consistently marginalized and shortchanged. Contemporary mainstream country music often feels like a closed loop of white male storytelling. Which is why whether or not Beyoncé and Nashville can find common cause is, in every way, a red herring.
